How To Become A University Lecturer
The most important thing in becoming a university lecturer is to get the qualifications needed. If you decided to pursue this career a while ago (around 50 years before the career became professionalised) a post graduate qualification was not really necessary. However nowadays things are very different in the education world. It is now near impossible to achieve a permanent lectureship without completing a PHD and that is combined with a good bachelors degree of 2.1 or above and possibly masters too.
Although if you think you can do it, then go grab that educational career. However before you rush into it think about what can make you stand out and how to sponge all that experience prior to your permanent lectureship. Whilst you are doing your PhD you may be offered the chance, although many universities discourage the idea, to do on an hourly rate, a little teaching in your department. This could be anything from marking essays and teaching seminars, to contributing towards labs and possibly lectures too. This is a great step forward in expanding your experience and skills for the position.
Following all the hard work of your PHD and experience building, many scholars still find it particularly difficult to find their perfect job immediately. But dont let this put you off, as everybody needs to start somewhere. Hourly paid or temporary and part time jobs are always available and will assist in you gaining even more experience for when a well paid, suitable job comes up. Reviewing this time as something to help further develop your skills and CV content is great for helping you through this possibly stressful time.
So where can you find the jobs that will provide you with the salary, professionalism and general long lived happy success driven career that you have always dreamed of? The first place to start is with your colleagues, supervisors, friends, friends of friends and many others in the academia field. Make sure you always ask plenty of questions and for lots of advice as their answers will be invaluable. The search for you as the perfect candidate will be processed through members of the department, and only later will these positions be advertised publicly.
The internet and recruitment agencies are also a great place to look for the perfect job role. This way you can actually read their requirements and details of the job role to make sure you are their perfect candidate prior to your application.
