Bob Jones University
Bob Jones University is a private, non-denominational Protestant educational institution located in Greenville, South Carolina. The institution was founded in 1927 by evangelist Bob Jones, Sr. The current president of the university, Stephen Jones, is the great-grandson of the founder and the fourth member of the Jones family to serve as president.
The school, originally known as Bob Jones College, was established in 1927 near Panama City, on the Florida panhandle. In 1933, the institution moved to Cleveland, Tennessee. In 1947, the school relocated to its current 210 acre campus in Greenville, South Carolina, where it became Bob Jones University. Bob Jones, Sr. was the president of the school from its inception in 1927 through 1947, followed by Bob Jones, Jr. from 1947 – 1971, Bob Jones III from 1971 – 2005, and Stephen Jones from 2005 to the present.
Bob Jones University enrolls approximately 4,000 students representing every U.S. state and fifty foreign countries. From its inception, BJU has been located in the South, but it does not have a predominantly southern student body. The state with the largest number of students enrolled at Bob Jones University is South Carolina, but many of these are married students who have moved from other states to attend the school. Other states with large representations in the BJU student body include Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Ohio.
The university consists of seven colleges and schools that offer more than 125 undergraduate majors, including fourteen associate degree programs. The school also conducts precollege education from pre-kindergarten through high school. The Division of Fine Arts has the largest faculty of Bob Jones University’s six undergraduate schools. BJU presents an opera each year in the spring semester and Shakespearean plays in both the fall and spring semesters. A service called Vespers, presented periodically throughout each school year, combines music, speech, and drama. Over a hundred concerts, recitals, and theater productions are also presented annually.
Bob Jones University is accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools, an accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. BJU is also a founding member of the American Association of Christian Colleges and Seminaries. Within the cultural and academic soil of liberal arts education, Bob Jones University exists to grow Christ-like character that is scripturally disciplined, others-serving, God-loving, Christ-proclaiming, and focused above.
